Who can Claim the DLA Benefit
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a social security benefit that is administered by the United Kingdom government through the Department for Work and Pensions. You are eligible to claim for the benefit if you have personal care and mobility needs as a result of a mental or physical disability. However, your allowance and weekly rate of DLA will be dependent on your calculated care component, which is reviewed by the Health Assessment Advisory Service.
DLA and PIP General Enquiries – 0345 850 3322
You should call the Department for Work and Pensions on their DLA general Enquiries contact number 0345 850 3322 to calculate your eligibility for the benefit before asking how to complete an application. You should therefore use this number to discuss the nature of your disability before asking how to book an appointment with the Health Assessment Advisory Service to verify your claim for support. Moreover, the benefit is not dependent on your level of income but on how the Department for Work and Pensions has assessed the level of care you require. Notably, successful applicants who are classified to be of the lowest care component will receive £22 per week, whereas the highest awards claimants a weekly rate of £83.10. You should therefore use this number to discuss what constitutes a particular care component so that you will have a clearer idea of your estimated allowance before you make a claim. Notably, successful claimants may be invited to apply for the newer Personal Independence Payment system, but the new benefit is still designed to support individuals who have a disability.
You should also call the Department for Work and Pensions DLA helpline to report a change of circumstances that may affect your claim. For instance, you may be liable to pay a £50 fine and to repay overpaid benefits if you don’t report changes that will affect your entitlement. Furthermore, callers can also enquire about Disability Living Allowance for children if they require extra help of looking after a child who meets the eligibility criteria but will be directed to a further department for any enquiries relating to Attendance Allowance.
